Have you always been envious of people blessed with thick, luscious hair? Does it feel like you’re forever growing out a bad haircut? Does your hair seem to fall out faster than it grows? Trying to grow your hair with seemingly little progress isn’t an uncommon struggle, but it’s a struggle nonetheless.
Here are our top tips for growing the locks of your dreams and putting an end to brittle, thinning hair once and for all.
What not to do
The most important thing you can do to help your hair grow long and strong is prevent damage. If it feels like your hair is breaking off at the same rate that it’s growing, you need to invest in some preventative measures to help your hair become stronger and healthier.
Try to minimise your use of heat tools and always use a heat protect product beforehand. If you go to the beach, rinse the super-drying saltwater from your hair after every swim and wear a hat to keep your hair protected from the sun. And make sure to go to a professional to get your hair coloured— box dyes can be incredibly damaging, and home bleach disasters are a sure way to sabotage your hair’s length!
Care for your hair
Hair breakage can be caused by overly dry or damaged hair, so you have to give it what it needs to be strong and moisturised.
An easy way to do this is to buy a boar bristle brush and regularly brush your hair from roots to ends. This will distribute the natural oils from your scalp throughout your hair. Make sure to top this off with a treatment once a week, such as a hair mask.
You might be afraid of undoing your recent growth by cutting your hair, but regularly trimming split ends will actually help your hair to grow. If left to their own devices, split ends can travel up the hair shaft and cause more damage. Is the extra inch of hair really worth it if those ends are looking super frazzled?
If you’re still reluctant to chop off those ends, ask your hairdresser to “dust” your hair. This involves trimming only the very tips of your hair to preserve length whilst getting rid of those frizzy, split ends.
You are what you eat
If you want long, strong, shiny hair, you need to eat food that will nourish your body inside and out.
Make sure you’re eating a sufficient amount of protein and fats from whole foods. Fat is an essential part of our diet. Healthy, whole foods like avocado, nuts and olive oil are excellent sources of fat that will give your hair exactly what it needs to be healthy.
Protein makes up the building blocks of everything in your body, including your hair! Including a protein source in every meal and snack is a great way to combat brittle hair.
Collagen, the most abundant protein in the body, has been shown to be particularly beneficial for hair. You can get collagen from foods such as meat on the bone, bone broth, fatty fish such as salmon, and gelatine.
Invest in the right products
You can swear off heat styling, eat all the healthy fats in the world and get your hair trimmed every six weeks like clockwork, but none of that’s going to make a significant difference if you don’t use the right products to wash your hair.
You can’t expect to get Rapunzel locks if you’re using any old products. It’s critical that you invest in your hair’s health by choosing a shampoo, conditioner and treatment that will nourish and strengthen your hair.
